Eotech Red Dot Sight Selection Guide & Comparison Charts

EOTech holographic red dot sights provide a large sight window and precise reticle for quick, accurate, 2-eyes-open shots.

There are many options of EOtech red dot sights, so we created this guide to help you find the right sight for your needs.

EOTech Battery Types

There are 2 main styles of EOtech sights. The “classic” EOTech style uses 2 AA Batteries. A few years back, EOtech launched a new line of sights that uses 1 CR123 Lithium battery.

There are pros and cons to both types:

  • AA Batteries are cheap and easy to find, but they add size and weight to the unit
  • CR123 Batteries allow for a much smaller, lighter red dot sight. But the batteries cost a little more and are somewhat less common.

We generally recommend the CR123 EOTech sights. We think the smaller profile is more important than the few extra dollars you will spend on batteries.

Night Vision Compatibility

Some of the EOtech models are NV compatible. This adds some cost to the sight. Easy choice — if you don’t plan to use night vision, don’t spend the extra money.

Mount types

There are 2 choices:

  • Standard picatinny mount
  • Quick-detach picatinny riser mount

The QD mount can be handy if you plan to remove the sight frequently. Also, it’s worth noting that the standard mount provides absolute cowitness with AR-15 iron sights, and the riser mount is lower 1/3 cowitness.

EOtech Reticle Types

The EOtech has several reticle choices:

The classic 1MOA dot inside a 65 MOA ring

Two 1MOA dots inside a 65 MOA ring – for basic .223 bullet drop compensation

4-dot .223 ballistic reticle designed for long-range use with a magnifier

   .308 ballistic reticle

   .300 blackout ballistic reticle

For most people, the class dot & ring reticle will be best. If you are shooting .308 or .300 Blackout, go with those reticles. If you plan to use a magnifier, it’s worth looking at the 2-dot or 4-dot reticles.

Other EOtech Accessories

Magnification – The G33 3x magnifier is a nice upgrade to the EOtech, as it allows quick transition from short-range to mid-range functionality. The “HHS” line of EOtech sights includes the magnifier, and is cheaper than buying the 2 items separately.

Laser battery cap – EOtech offers a battery cap with a built in laser, for use with the AA battery sights

So Which One is Best?

As with so many things – it depends! But for the majority of users, we would recommend the XPS2-0 red dot sight. It is one of the lowest priced sights as it doesn’t have the QD riser mount, or night vision capability. Also, the CR123 battery style allows this sight to small and lightweight.
