5.45×39 was adopted by the USSR along with the AK-74, to further modernize the Kalashnikov rifle. This cartridge is very similar to 5.56 NATO, with a lighter bullet and flatter trajectory, providing better accuracy over long distance, and excellent terminal ballistics.
